World Heart Day By Veantha Naidoo
The 29th of September marks World Heart Day, and is used as a platform to spread awareness on various cardiovascular diseases.
This initiative was started by the World Heart Federation after they found a growing number of individuals suffering from heart disease.
According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of death worldwide.
It is estimated that 17.5 million people died from cardiovascular disease in 2005, and resulted in 30 percent of all global deaths. Some of the risk factors that may lead to heart disease and stroke include smoking, obesity and not leading a healthy lifestyle.
Tips on taking care of your heart:
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Exercise for 20 minutes for at least three times a week
- Drink more water
- Go for regular health check-ups
- Get enough sleep
- Eat a healthy diet
