An eThekwini Metro council meeting yesterday has left councillors shocked after allegations of an apparent poisoning attempt on the mayor emerged. Speaker William Lekgoa Mapena had announced that there was paraffin in one of the water bottles handed out during the meeting. Following the announcement, Acting Mayor Fawzia Peer apparently “abruptly” left covering her mouth. The municipality released a statement yesterday denying allegations that Peer had been “poisoned”. The water she consumed has been sent to the laboratory for testing. A conclusion will be made as the test results emerge.
