UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has told the European Union the Irish border backstop must be scrapped as it is unviable and anti-democratic.
In a letter to European Council president Donald Tusk, Johnson adds that the backstop risks undermining the Northern Irish peace process.
The measure would introduce a hard border between the Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.
According to Tusk, those opposing the arrangement without realistic alternatives support re-establishing a hard border.
